Why I started Safer International Driving

As a driving instructor, I kept seeing the same thing. Millions of international visitors arrive in the UK every year, hire a car, and drive on roads they have never encountered before — on the wrong side of the road, with no formal preparation whatsoever. Some arrive confident. Most arrive anxious. All of them deserve better. That's when I decided to build Safer International Driving.

Understanding the Problem

Here's the reality: you need a safety briefing to drive a go-kart at 20mph, but nothing to drive a hire car on the wrong side of the road in a foreign country for the first time. The rental company takes your money and hands over the keys. That's it.

The statistics back this up. International drivers are overrepresented in certain types of incidents — particularly in unfamiliar situations like narrow roads, car parks, and slow-speed manoeuvres. It's not because international drivers are bad drivers. It's because they're unprepared for roads and vehicles they have never encountered before.

And it's not just tourists. I've seen the same anxiety in students arriving at UK universities for the first time, professionals relocating for work, and families arriving with limited experience driving on the left. Even experienced drivers struggle with some of the UK's road network — especially in Scotland, where single-track roads, passing places, and mountain passes throw up genuine challenges.

Why This Matters

Road safety isn't abstract. Every driver who arrives better prepared is someone who arrives more confident, more aware, and less likely to cause or be involved in an incident. At scale, that has a genuine impact on the roads we all share.

The data shows it too. Transport Scotland reported crashes involving overseas drivers on the wrong side of the road increased by 46% in one year. Police Scotland confirmed 3-4 fatal or serious accidents in one summer involving North American tourists. The NC500 reported 307 accidents between 2016-2020, a rate of 0.59 accidents per mile — one of the highest-risk road trip routes in the UK.

These aren't just statistics. These are families, holiday plans disrupted, and lives changed. Most of it could be prevented with proper preparation.

Identifying the Gap

When I looked at what was available, there was nothing. No structured, professional preparation for international drivers. No one addressing the specific challenges they face. No one explaining what roundabouts actually are, how single-track roads work, or why jet lag and a 12-hour time difference make driving on unfamiliar roads genuinely dangerous.

There was YouTube. There was the Highway Code. There was fragmented advice scattered across travel blogs. But there was no one place where an international driver could arrive genuinely prepared. That gap needed filling.

Building the Solution

I'm a qualified Approved Driving Instructor with over 60 years of combined expertise from the instructor network behind Safer International Driving. I teach driving for a living. I know what confuses international drivers. I know what worries them. And I know exactly what preparation actually works.

So I built Safer International Driving as a complete driver preparation platform.
